Trailhead — the start of a journey with unexpected turns ahead. This project evolved into a family of products that expressed the streetwear influence on modern outdoor footwear. Built on Vans Ultrarange MTE3 rugged bottom with inspiration from Taka Hayashi’s AMZN TRL.&#38;nbsp;

Positive reception of AMZN Trailhead yielded demand for a fully weatherized version. The Vans MTE 3 level comes equipped with a Gore-Tex bootie, All-Trak rubber outsoles and 300G insulation for extreme weather scenarios. 
I had identified an emerging trend in outdoor footwear: sleek shell-like uppers treated with streetwear design language. By building up layers of no-sew for structure and durability, I was able to mold in detail while keeping the silhouette modern and seamless.

The result is a shoe tailored to his sensibilities and needs both on and off the board. The scope of this project was to design a high top adapation of Crockett’s 2nd signature shoe.A true lover of all things “Made in USA”, Crockett came to the design team at Vans with images of mid-century millitary boots and basketball shoes from the golden era in American manufacturing.

Sketching
Crockett provided an initial sketch and from there I explored a combination of mid-century details and modern skate functionality.

Energize and refresh the classic Vans styles to connect with a streetwear consumer. I wanted to offer something in addition to just the style component for these adaptations. By focusing on playing with the foxing tape as the point of expression, it adds durablility and connects to vans history as a vulcanized shoe brand.
The style initially released as Sk8-Hi and then was expanded in to Old Skool and further for special projects and more. &#38;nbsp;

Designed in 1999, the Vans Upland was a big success with skate inspired consumers. Back then, designers drew inspiration from 80s athletic shoes and some of Vans 80s Serio Line of court tennis shoes.

In this reimagining we take the same approach for today’s youth.

‘Ultimate Waffle’ technology was introduced by the Vans AVE Pro and the ethos of the design is to expose the internal features of comfort and support and express an expertice in design. My goal was to blend the clear and classic rubber toe with an influence from basketball where clear soles evoke a feeling of nostalgia for sneakerheads and skate shoe dreamers.

Rowan Zorilla is a professional athlete from California. He has had two signature styles on Vans, one classic vulcanized and the other a tech forward cupsole featuring ‘Impact Waffle’. We were tasked to create a new style which incorporates the best of both styles to serve Rowan’s skating for the future.


‘Impact Waffle’ technology was introduced by Skate Zahba Team Style. Its main feature is a waffle geometry reminiscent of Vans Classic Waffle pattern, which exposes a foam midsole, increases dampening performance while retaining full durability. 
My goal was to blend this geometry with sport-inspired outsole graphics to create a recognizable design that offers all the functionality and shock absorption without sacrifices.

Inspiration &#38;amp; Sketching

Rowan has a love for baseball, having the launch of his second shoe at the diamond and making up some special cleats. Seeing pitchers on the mound in special make ups had me drawing inspiration from cleats when designing new upper and tooling for this shoe.

‘Ultimate Waffle’ technology was introduced by the Vans AVE Pro and the ethos of the design is to expose the internal features of comfort and support and express an expertice in design. My goal was to blend the clear and classic rubber toe with an influence from basketball where clear soles evoke a feeling of nostalgia for sneakerheads and skate shoe dreamers.

	It’s no secret we live in an ever evolving world, sometimes the last thing youd expect is exactly what plays out, that can be the excitement that grabs a consumers attention. Vans made Basketball shoes in the 1970s, through the short lived Serio footwear collection, so maybe this stretch from Vans its all that far fetched.&#38;nbsp;


	The universe now appeared to me as a void wherein floated rare flakes of snow, each flake a universe.

	My name is Jake Crawford 
and I’m creative at heart. I spend my days expressing myself in all sorts of projects like sketching out concepts, writing and recording music, or skateboarding throughout Long Beach, California. &#38;nbsp;


I grew up cruising in cul-de-sacs and in a punk band with my brother and our friends in the Midwest. What began as an interest in designing T-shirt graphics for our band eventually led to modding and building guitars for us to play. Those activities piqued my interest in design. Ultimately, I enrolled at the University of Kansas’ School of Design and earned a BFA in Industrial Design and Visual Communications with a minor in Art History.


After getting my degree, I moved to Chicago where I worked at a design and fabrication shop during the day, while moonlighting as a sound engineer at clubs around town at night. I was lucky enough to work with artists like The Wu-Tang Clan, Bad Brains, and Paramore, to name a few faves. While I loved being in Chicago, I was elated when I was offered the opportunity to move to California for an apprenticeship at Vans.


Starting as a design apprentice and rising through the ranks to become a Footwear Designer on the Skate team, I’ve designed dozens of sneakers from sketches to final products. The sneakers have ranged from performance skate footwear to lifestyle kids novelty. Most recently my work has been focused on creating more trend-driven styles for casual shoes, playing into the Y2K and sport inspired trends that are dominating the market. I often work closely with athletes directly on their signature models, while I research draw inspiration from travel, art, fashion and street culture to ensure my designs meet the functional and stylistic needs too excite the people, punks, kids, skateboarders, and normies alike.


Footwear Skills: Sketching, Technical Drawing, Tech Packs, Working directly with Development, Making timely changes on my footwear for fit, style and function. I have compiled photos taken on market travel to create mood boards and trend direction to guide my art and create color pack for specific consumers.


I have also designed unique accessories, custom packaging, and new textiles from working with LTD and SMU collaborators such as: Quasi, Hockey, Fucking Awesome, Alltimers, etc.
